Apart from the possibility of measuring at 24 locations in the pelvic floor, the MAPLe can also provide electrical stimulation (FES). The 24 electrodes allow the therapist to use different configurations to provide electrical stimulation on different depths and on different sides. It is therefore possible to reach all areas of the pelvic floor with one probe.

For the MAPLe we have ‒ apart from measurement at multiple points ‒ also developed another technology. This technology makes it possible to show only the activity of the pelvic floor only. The co-contractions of the surrounding muscles that are always present will not be reproduced in the measurement with the MAPLe. Obviously, this is very important as this make the MAPLe the only system measuring the actual activity in the pelvic floor muscles. This will allow the therapist to provide better guidance during treatment. The therapist can now see whether the patient actually tightens and relaxes the right muscles in the correct way.
The muscles in the pelvic floor are located on the different sides of the pelvic floor and at different depths in the pelvic floor. Recent research has also shown that the pelvic floor is controlled by two different nerves for the different levels. For the superficial muscles this is the Nervus Pudendal and for the deeper muscles (Levator Ani) this is the Nervus Perineal. If you are carrying out measurements that do not see the difference in the activity of the different muscles, there is a good chance that the actual cause of the patient’s problems will be missed. And now, as the first and only system, the MAPLe can actually make this distinction.
In the development stage and in the clinical research it was shown that the length over which the electrodes on the probe are divided are - in every anatomical variation - closely adjacent to the muscles to be measured. A minimum distance between the electrodes is necessary in order to prevent interference between the various electrodes. All this resulted in the grid of 24 electrodes being the best configuration for measuring the pelvic floor in different individuals optimally.
In most cases, the probe will certainly stay in its place. In some situations, however, the probe has to be hold to prevent dislocation. Holding the probe should really be a standard procedure. You as a pelvic floor therapist can feel much better what is going on in the pelvic floor during measurement while holding the probe.
The MAPLe was developed in a clinical setting. If the probe would be wider/thicker, it would in some situations cause pre-tension on the muscles resulting in a different measurement and therefore a different diagnosis. Obviously this is undesirable as the clinical outcome should always be leading.
Interpreting 1 EMG signal in a line diagram is of course no problem. As soon as there are 24, this becomes impossible. In the development of the MAPLe we spent a lot of time on this interpretation. The starting point was that professional and patient would be able to see in a single glance where in the pelvic floor the problem lies. In the MAPLe software application you will therefore find a graphic representation in the shape of a circle. This circle makes it possible to see the analysis of the muscle activity in the pelvic floor in one go.
